What is Islam?
ٱلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُم
As-salāmu ʿalaykum — peace be upon you
Islam is not a new message, but the oldest — the same call every prophet carried: to know the One God, live with mercy, and return to Him in peace.
The word itself
A word that means peace.
The Arabic word إِسْلَام (Islām) shares its root with the word سَلَام (salām) — peace. To embrace Islam is to enter into peace: peace with your Creator, peace within yourself, and peace with those around you.
A Muslim is simply one who has chosen this path of trust — recognizing that the same God who created the stars, the seas, and every heartbeat is worthy of being known, loved, and worshipped alone.
The Six Articles of Faith
What Muslims believe.
A Muslim's heart rests on six certainties — the framework of belief taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
ٱللَّٰه
God — Allah
One, eternal, unlike any of His creation. He is the Merciful, the Sustainer, and the only One worthy of worship.
ٱلْمَلَائِكَة
Angels
Created from light. They obey Allah completely and carry out His commands, recording deeds and delivering revelation.
ٱلْكُتُب
Divine Books
Guidance sent to humanity through prophets — including the Torah, Psalms, Gospel, and finally the Qur'an, preserved unchanged.
ٱلرُّسُل
Prophets
From Adam to Muhammad ﷺ, over 124,000 messengers were sent with the same core message: worship God alone.
ٱلْيَوْمُ ٱلْآخِر
The Last Day
Life is a journey with a destination. Every soul returns to Allah and is answered for what it did — with perfect justice and mercy.
ٱلْقَدَر
Divine Decree
Nothing happens outside Allah's knowledge. Trust in Him brings peace; effort remains ours, but outcomes rest with Him.

ٱلشَّهَادَة
Shahādah — Testimony
Bearing witness that there is no god but Allah, and that Muhammad ﷺ is His messenger. The doorway into Islam.

Salāh — Prayer
Five daily prayers that anchor the day in remembrance of God — a direct, private conversation with the Creator.

ٱلزَّكَاة
Zakāh — Purifying Charity
An annual portion (2.5%) of wealth given to those in need — purifying what we own and reminding us that all belongs to Allah.

ٱلصَّوْم
Ṣawm — Fasting Ramaḍān
From dawn to sunset for one month a year: no food, no drink, no anger. A school for the soul, held once every year.

ٱلْحَجّ
Ḥajj — Pilgrimage
The journey to Makkah, once in a lifetime for those able. Rich and poor stand equal in white cloth before their Lord.
إِنَّ ٱلدِّينَ عِنْدَ ٱللَّٰهِ ٱلْإِسْلَامُ
"Indeed, the religion with Allah is Islam — willing submission to Him."

Common questions
Clearing gentle misconceptions.
- Is Islam a new religion?
- No. Islam is the same message brought by every prophet — from Adam and Abraham to Moses, Jesus, and finally Muhammad ﷺ: worship the One God.
- What does the word Islam mean?
- Islam comes from the Arabic root s-l-m, meaning peace and voluntary submission. A Muslim is one who finds peace through surrender to God.
- Do Muslims worship Muhammad?
- No. Muslims worship only Allah — the One who created the heavens and the earth. Muhammad ﷺ is deeply loved and followed as His final messenger, but never worshipped.
- Who is Allah?
- Allah is simply the Arabic word for God — the same God worshipped by Abraham, Moses, and Jesus. Arab Christians also call God 'Allah'.
