His story
Yūnus was sent to the people of Nineveh. When they refused to believe, he left them in anger before Allah's permission, boarding a ship. The ship was overloaded, lots were drawn, and he was thrown into the sea, where a great fish swallowed him.
In three layers of darkness — the night, the sea, and the belly of the fish — he called out: 'There is no deity except You; exalted are You. Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers.' Allah answered him and saved him, and promised the same rescue to every believer who calls with that prayer.
He was cast onto an open shore, ill, and a gourd plant was made to grow over him. Then he was sent back to his people — and uniquely among the nations, they all believed, and Allah lifted the punishment from them.
