Ilyās (Elijah)إلياس

Who called his people away from idols

← All prophets

His story

Ilyās was sent to a people who had abandoned the Lord of their forefathers for Baʿl, an idol of their age. He confronted them with a single question: 'Will you not fear Allah? Do you call upon Baʿl and leave the best of creators?'

They denied him, and the Qur'an records that they will be brought for account — except the chosen servants of Allah. Yet Allah left peace upon Ilyās among later generations, the honour He gives to those who stand alone for the truth.

Mentioned in the Qur'an — with proof

Full details

The full account — Ilyās (Elijah)

Ilyās, sent to a people who had turned to worshipping Baʿl instead of Allah — the Qur'an preserves his call and his people's rejection in a brief, forceful passage, without narrating the fuller events of his life.

Part 01

One of the messengers

The Qur'an introduces him with the same formula used for other prophets in Sūrah al-Ṣāffāt: and indeed, Ilyās was among the messengers. This single sentence situates him firmly within the same chain as Nūḥ, Ibrāhīm, and Mūsā mentioned in the same sūrah, even though the Qur'an gives him far fewer verses than it gives them.

His call, as recorded, was direct: he said to his people, will you not fear Allah? Do you call upon Baʿl and abandon the best of creators — Allah, your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers? The idol Baʿl is named nowhere else in the Qur'an, making this one of the very few places scripture names a specific deity worshipped by a prophet's own people.

Proof

  • Qur'an, Sūrah al-Ṣāffāt 37:123–126

“And lo! Elias was of those sent (to warn), When he said unto his folk: Will ye not ward off (evil)? Will ye cry unto Baal and forsake the Best of creators, Allah, your Lord and Lord of your forefathers?”

Part 02

Rejection, and rescue for the sincere

His people denied him — the Qur'an states this plainly — and so they were destined to be brought forth for punishment, except the sincere servants of Allah among them. As with several other prophets in this sūrah, the pattern is the same: a clear call, a rejecting majority, and a small group of the sincere who are spared and whose good remembrance is left among later generations.

The passage ends with the same refrain repeated for other prophets in Sūrah al-Ṣāffāt: peace be upon Ilyāsīn (a variant reading and form of his name), and a declaration that Allah rewards those who do good, for he was among Allah's believing servants.

Proof

  • Qur'an, Sūrah al-Ṣāffāt 37:127–132

“But they denied him, so they surely will be haled forth (to the doom) Save single-minded slaves of Allah. And we left for him among the later folk (the salutation): Peace be unto Elias! Lo! thus do We reward the good. Lo! he is one of our believing slaves.”

Part 03

A second, briefer mention

Ilyās is named once more in Sūrah al-Anʿām, in a list of prophets Allah guided from the descendants of Nūḥ and Ibrāhīm, alongside Zakariyyā, Yaḥyā, and ʿĪsā: and Ismāʿīl, and al-Yasaʿ, and Yūnus, and Lūṭ — and each We preferred above the worlds; and among their fathers, their descendants, and their brothers — We chose them and guided them to a straight path.

As with Dhū al-Kifl, the Qur'an offers no account of Ilyās's later life, his community's location, or the specific outcome for his people beyond what is stated. What is preserved is enough for guidance — that he called plainly to the worship of Allah alone against a named idol, and that this single act of sincere calling secured him a place among the messengers whose good name is remembered until the Last Day.

Proof

  • Qur'an, Sūrah al-Anʿām 6:84–87

“And We bestowed upon him Isaac and Jacob; each of them We guided; and Noah did We guide aforetime; and of his seed (We guided) David and Solomon and Job and Joseph and Moses and Aaron. Thus do We reward the good. And Zachariah and John and Jesus and Elias. Each one (of them) was of the righteous. And Ishmael and Elisha and Jonah and Lot. Each one (of them) did We prefer above (Our) creatures, With some of their forefathers and their offspring and their brethren; and We chose them and guided them unto a straight path.”
